Snowdon Mountain Railway is the only public rack and pinion railway in the UK.

Your Journey To The Summit of Mount Snowdon
Majestic Mount Snowdon dominates the glorious. ancient landscape of North Wales. At 3,560ft it is a true mountain and a place of legend - said to be the burial place of the giant ogre Rhita, vanquished by King Arthur. Some believe that Arthur’s knights still sleep beneath. Since 1896, the Snowdon Mountain Railway has been making it easy to claim this mountain peak as one of your lifetime achievements. In a tremendously ambitious feat of engineering, and uniquely in Britain, a rack and pinion railway was built which rises to within 66ft of the summit of the highest mountain in England and Wales.

.Your Journey begins at Llanberis Station at the foot of the highest mountain in England and Wales. Enjoy an awe inspiring 13 minute virtual journey 'To the Summit of Snowdon' in the new Film Theatre at Llanberis Station. Then board your train to travel through woodland, across an impressive viaduct before starting the long haul up to the ridge and onto the mountain itself. During your ascent of the mountain listen to an in-carriage commentary revealing the secrets of Snowdonia, a region rich in landscape, wildlife and myth.
On fine days the views from the train and summit are breathtaking. The view from the top takes in the Isle of Man and the Wicklow mountains in Ireland.
During your 30 minute stay at the peak, you can simply savour the views or make use of the summit facilities. Your train then begins its descent, arriving back at Llanberis 21/2 hours after your journey began.
Opening Times of Snowdon Mountain Railway
Weather permitting, trains run every day from mid March to the first
week of November inclusive. The Summit Station is the usual destination
between mid May and the end of October. From mid March to mid May
trains terminate at Clogwyn or Rocky Valley.
The first departure from Llanberis is scheduled for 9am, with trains
running at frequent intervals until late afternoon. At Bank Holidays
and during July, August and September, departures are half-hourly
with the last possible departure at 5pm.

Snowdon Mountain Railway Trains
Trains may be operated by either steam or diesel traction. Trains will only run subject to carrying a minimum number of passengers. The service is very popular in fine weather, especially during July, August and September, so pre-book at least one day in advance or arrive early to avoid disappointment.
